Fieldhead's Festive Five

Fieldhead's five favourite albums of 2011, in no particular order.

Austra - Feel it Break
I really shouldn't like this ridiculous, deriviative, 80s, cheesy, retro goth pop/disco album, but it's genuinely brilliant, and kept me sane through two sleep deprived, alcohol infused weeks careening around the UK and long periods of airport boredom.

Favourite track - 'Lose It' (the video is atrocious, mind).

Conquering Animal Sound - Kammerspiel
When you fall in love with a band early on there's always a fear that they're not going to deliver what you hoped they would. Conquering Animal Sound delivered a stunning and incredibly beautiful album, and I love it.

Favourite track - 'Ira'

Chad VanGaalen - Diaper Island
To be honest, this is a mixed album with a few particularly weak tracks... but it also has a handful of absolutely genius ones that have been on repeat pretty much constantly since I first heard him/saw him live in October.

Favourite track - 'Peace on the Rise'

The Pattern Theory - s/t
I've been waiting for this album for many, many years, and it's a brilliant document of why I love the band: simple, restrained and gorgeous, yet hugely fun. Hopefully I don't have to wait as long for the follow up.

Favourite track - 'Ideas of Fun'

Richard Knox & Frédéric D. Oberland - The Rustle of Stars
Simply the most evocatively beautiful thing I heard all year, bar none.

Favourite track - 'Sleeping Land (Part I)'

Circle of Sleep - January 20th/21st

Fieldhead will be playing a special one-off two hour set as part of The Western Front's 'Circle of Sleep' event. There will be two concerts over the weekend of January 20th - 22nd, with our set taking place in the (very) early morning of January 22nd.

Western Front say: "Circle of Sleep is an overnight concert, a meditation on sleep and dreaming that’s also a marathon of cutting-edge Canadian electronic music. Featuring nine artists from ambient music, new media, conceptual art, and improvisation, Circle of Sleep guides the audience through dream states from 10pm to dawn."

Pan Ambient Dim Sum

Back in the heat of August we played a show for Vancouver's The Konspiracy Group as part of their Pan Ambient series. The show was recorded, and two of our tracks ('Introductions' and a sketch of a new track, 'All Boxes') have been included in The Konspiracy Group's new compilation, 'Pan Ambient Dim Sum'.

Also featured are live recordings from the other artists who played the show (Tomas Jirku, Gunshae and Hong Kong Soap Operas) as well as a new track from Cancun's Lady Eve.

The compilation will be digitally released on December 1st 2011, but is available immediately from The Konspiracy Group's bandcamp page.

Not Me - Fieldhead remix

Vancouver's CSAF Records have been releasing a series of virtual 12-inch singles throughout 2011 as part of their '2011-12s' series. September's installment has just been released, and features Fieldhead's remix of 'nwt 2011', as well as mixes from Ross Birdwise and connect_icut. I've just finished two more remixes to add to the ever increasing pile...

Firstly, I've re-worked The Japanese War Effort's 'Bucket & Spade' which should hopefully feature as part of the release of his 'Surrender to Summer' EP released on Song by Toad in July. It's a bit of a departure for a Fieldhead remix, and you could potentially even sing along to it...

Secondly, I've also re-worked Not Me's track 'nwt' as part of CSAF records excellent 2011-12s series, which features five virtual 12" releases, and also includes remixes from Loscil, Vincent Parker, The Luminaries, connect_icut and more. Download the series so far here, but you'll have to wait until September until my mix is available.

Remixes - Conquering Animal Sound/Spokes

Two Fieldhead remixes have surfaced...

Firstly, the remixed version of Conquering Animal Sound's excellent "Kammerspiel" which came with the first 50 copies of the album proper has now been made available for download through Gizeh Records. It features our remix of "Giant", as well as other re-workings by Errors, slowsecret, brothersGRIMM, Field Mouse, Dam Mantle, Lamplighter, Iliop and Fox Gut Daata.

You can stream our remix (and Errors') here, and you can buy the album (simply entitled "Kammerspiel Remixed") from Gizeh Records here.

Secondly, our remix of Spokes' track "Give It Up To The Night" can now be streamed and downloaded from their Soundcloud page, here.

Caught in the Wake Forever remix

We've contributed a remix to Caught in the Wake Forever's forthcoming EP on Mini50 records, "All The Hurt That Hinders Home". The EP will be released on June 13th, and will also feature remixes from Library Tapes, Sketches for Albinos, Jonnie Common and Yellow 6.

The remixes will only be available on the physical release, which you'll be able to pre-order from Mini50 records at the end of April.

"My new home of Vancouver can be a very changeable place. You can be traipsing through a rain sodden downtown or endless grid of suburbs one minute, to be suddenly confronted by snow capped mountains, ocean and endless forests the next. New track 'reference line' available from CSAF records

I've just contributed a track to Vancouver's CSAF records 10-20 2010 series. It's called 'reference line' and is a minimal, studio version of an improvised piece performed with Ora Cogan at Fake Jazz in Vancouver on September 1st 2010. As no recording was made of the performance, a recreation was made from memory.

'Long Train Journeys' live album released on Gizeh Records

A new live album, 'Long Train Journeys' has been released on Gizeh Records, and includes live versions of tracks from 'They Shook Hands for Hours' and 'An Arrow' recorded from tours around Europe and Canada earlier this year. The albums is availble for download by donation from Gizeh Records. The tracklisting is below:
